Q: Is bleeding between the teeth always a dental problem? I have been bleeding from between my teeth and also from my mouth sometimes when I spit, and it seems to happen a lot when I am feeling stressed out, when I am angry about something, or when I have kept my mouth closed for long period of time.

Sometimes I spit and the spit is dark and thick coming from my throat, but many times it is coming from between my lower left teeth area.

Should I see a doctor before I see a dentist? I am afraid that if I see a dentist first, they might not be able to determine whether the bleeding problem is related to other health problems.

A: My suggestion:
Set up two appointments:

  1. A physician for a complete exam, blood profile, and any necessary follow up
  2. A periodontist for a complete oral evaluation with digital x rays

They should be able to help you and diagnose your problem.
