A: Yes. There are options for treating gum disease. Your first step would be a proper diagnosis, which would include a full set of digital x-rays. Then your periodontist would outline a treatment plan. Be sure that he or she has the option of using a laser with a proven track record and an FDA clearance. There are several important lasers of different wavelengths and each one has different indications. Do your research and if laser treatment is presented as an option, ask which laser and why that particular one is proposed. Also ask how much experience your periodontist has in using that particular laser and lasers in general.
