How is a second root canal possible, if there is no root and no pain?

Q: I had a root canal done 14 years ago on my front tooth (#9) and now the crown is loose and the tooth has an infection and a small abscess. My dentist says I need another root canal. How is that possible if the root has already been removed? My second question is, why can’t I take antibiotics to clear the infection and just have the tooth re-cemented? It’s a huge difference in price: $100 versus $1000.

A: If the tooth is worth saving, then a re-treatment could be indicated. I would seek the opinion of an Endodontist (specialist in root canals) and find out the prognosis.
