Q: I have 2 implants in the lower left that are 1.5 years old. Both implants show significant bone loss and one implant is infected (pus/blood/3 weeks). One periodontist wants to do a bone graft, but I’ve read that this is bound to fail in an infected area (or the area should heal first). Another periodontist said I should do a gum flap (implants may be partially visible after this). What should I do? On antibiotics for 2 weeks, no help so far. What should I do? Who should pay for this? Thank you!
A: We used to do flaps and bone grafts for this problem with failing implants. However, we now use and teach a laser protocol to save failing implants with bone loss. This is called LAPIP. You can check this procedure out on our web site or just google it yourself.
