  • Can a soft tissue laser be used to vaporize the top gum tissue?

Q: Can a soft tissue laser be used to vaporize the top gum tissue, in order to reduce sulcus depths, as part of periodontal treatment?

A: There are a number of dental lasers with specific wavelengths that affect the gums and bone around the teeth in different ways, according to the need. An ND/YAG using an FDA cleared protocol can promote bone regeneration in addition to killing bacteria. We also have success with Erbium and CO2 lasers. It is important to choose a laser with the correct wavelength for success.
