Is bleeding gums from tobacco chewing a sign of cancer or disease?

Q: My gum was bleeding from chewing tobacco. Is that a sign of cancer or disease? The bleeding was where my gum was always very thin because of a tooth that juts out.

A: Even though chewing tobacco is a dangerous habit, it could be possible that the gum is receding and has disease. I would suggest seeing a Periodontist as soon as possible for a diagnosis and treatment plan. Maybe this will be a “wake up call” to quit the tobacco chewing habit.
